IMARES survey activities
Fisheries surveys
Benthic and Shellfish surveys
Marine fisheries can be grouped into two types: demersal fisheries (close to the sea bottom) and pelagic fisheries on schooling fish (mid water).
Scientific surveys carried out by Wageningen IMARES cover both types of fisheries.
Surveys on demersal fish use beam- or otter trawls and are highly standardized whereas pelagic surveys use sonar techniques combined with pelagic trawls when targeting schooling fish.
